2010 Homicides: December

The final month of 2010. The final month of this list. It could be longer as during the funeral of Mr. Denmon, a gun fight broke out around the church. The only injury was, thankfully, an ankle of a congregant fractured while trying to take cover.

Elijah Nelson, 22--Damen D Washington, 19--Marion Denmon, 20--Jermaine E Rowe, 27--Sujendra Amarasingham, 25--Tyson L Strong, 26

Shot by a police officer--Ken Gurley, 40

A long year in homicide. A long long year.

Dear The Observer,
What a long and terrible--but thought-provoking--series. It is hard to go all the way through. And to have more gunfire in the congregation is just such a telling accent to all the rest.

My sympathies to the family, friends, and congregants of Elijah, Damen, Marion, Jermaine, Sujendra, Tyson, and Ken. May they find comfort.

My sympathies also to the police officer who killed Ken Gurley. May he find help and support within his family, with his friends, his colleagues, his agency, and the city.

Very truly yours,
Ann T. Hathaway

This is where I really missed you! Your consistent responses to this sorry long list kept me going that I was doing something that was worthwhile.

You do remember certain cases. And the majority of those in South Patrol I remember.

One of the default comments you find at forums that are open to such (and many are closed, such as the newspaper) is that these are just (objectionable language alert) "nigs killing nigs" and it's not a big deal.

It is a big deal, to lose this much life for some very stupid reasons. We, being sinful and imperfect, will always struggle to get along. But there has to be a better way than this for people in our community to resolve conflict then resorting to violence of the deadliest king.
