First Homicide of 2010 in SKC

Still of hotel exterior from KSHB (www.nbcactionnews.com)
It only took one hour and fifteen minutes into the new year for Kansas City to rack up its first homicide. South Kansas City had the (non)honor of hosting the homicide at Joshua's, in the 5700 block of Longview Road in the old Holiday Inn (now called the Crescent), a night spot not unfamiliar to the officers of South Patrol. It seems some ladies had a disagreement. When security told them to leave, they continued their fight in the parking lot. Someone pulled a gun, and bang, someone was mortally wounded. Police have one suspect in custody--according to news reports, hotel security held her--pretty brave (even if off duty PD) as this woman had already shown she was ready to shoot. Killed was 25 year old Latasha Prewitt. Held for the murder is 19 year old Jasmine Depriest. Another person is also being held in connection to the case. What caused the fight? Was it honor, swagger, over a man, over a wrong?--only the participants know. Maybe I'm getting old, but women fighting? Women packing heat? And now, one young life is shortened, and at least two young lives are going to be placed in the care of correctional system. Not a good way to start the new year.
